The Finnish Defence Forces will organise the CISM's 59th Military Pentathlon World Championships in August 2012. The championships will be held in Finland for the first time. The patron of the games will be the Minister of Defence Stefan Wallin. The overarching theme of the International Military Sports Council’s championships is Friendship Through Sport.

The championships’ headquarters will be the Häme Regiment in Hennala, Lahti, which is where military athletes will compete in obstacle running, throwing and cross-country running. The shooting event will take place at Hälvälä shooting range's 300 metre rifle range and the obstacle swimming in the outdoor swimming pool of the Lahti Sports Centre. Athletes will also compete in relay races.

Registration for the competitions has begun. Approximately 200 competitors are expected to take part in the championships as well as the team leaders of 150 teams representing 30 to 35 countries.

The main organisers of the championships are the Häme Regiment and the Army Command. The Häme Regiment has organised similar Nordic championships in Lahti in 2002, 2006 and 2011.
